Pie Iron Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

One of our readers, Elizabeth, was camping with her husband when they both had a craving for a good Philly Cheesesteak. Elizabeth then decided to make her own Philly Cheesesteak recipe in a pie iron and let me be the first to tell you that it is wonderful! Pie iron cooking is one of my favorites while camping. They clean up easy and most of the recipes are fairly simple.

This recipe works the best when you do a little preparation ahead of time. Elizabeth suggested to chop up and sauté the onions, green peppers and mushrooms. She put the sautéd vegetables in a sealed container to bring with to the campsite; it makes it so much easier.

Give this recipe a try and let us know what you think about it! We encourage you to make new recipes or even your old favorites; and submit them to us!

Recipe type: Lunch/Dinner

Ingredients
  • White bread
  • Roast beef
  • Provolone cheese slices
  • Onion, Green pepper & mushroom mixture
  • Butter

Instructions
  1. The day before, chop up your onion, green peppers and mushrooms and sauté until just tender. (I chopped it all up into about ¼” size pieces) Put in a container and keep refrigerated until ready to use.
  2. Lay a piece of buttered bread (butter side down) on one side of the pie iron. Place a piece of Provolone, then 3-4 slices of roast beef, then a nice mound of the onion/green pepper/mushroom mixture, then another piece of provolone, and top with a second piece of buttered white bread. Close the pie iron, and cook until toasty & melty (turning and checking often, of course). Let cool and enjoy! Super easy, you can prep the “hard part” ahead of time. Best of all, it was DELICIOUS.
