Gear of the Year Awards 2015: Onewheel

It wasn’t too long ago the idea of gliding over the hills and open prairies with an electric board beneath your feet was something from a science fiction novel, or at the very least, something you might see on an episode of “MTV Cribs”. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re proud to tell you, the future is here.

Launched on Kickstarter in the Winter of 2014 by parent company Future Motion, Onewheel provides a completely new experience, while incorporating numerous elements of other board sports. At its core, the Onewheel relies on its only moving part; the Hub Motor. From there, the brains take over, literally. Using solid state, inertial sensors and algorithms, the Onewheel balances the board around the center wheel. Sure, there’s a learning curve, shorter if you’ve stepped on a skateboard or snowboard in the last decade, but the controls are completely intuitive. Simply lean forward to drive forward, back to stop, and press your heels or toes to turn left and right.

Now that the future is here, we’re going to have to figure out how to pay for it. Onewheel isn’t a “sit in the back of your garage until the next garage sale” type of investment, with a single Onewheel unit and Ultracharger ringing up at nearly $1,500. For that price, you’ll receive a two horsepower, made-in-America beast that’ll turn pavement and trails into your own personal playground. We don’t think you’ll be alone out there either, with shipment dates ranging from 6 – 8 weeks, the future isn’t quite on demand…yet.
