Doughnut holes are easy and fun to make at your campsite. Whether it’s for breakfast or as a snack, everyone will want to pitch in and help. Best yet, it’s simple enough for the kids to really be a part of the action.

You can make fantastic tasting doughnut holes with just 3 ingredients—refrigerated buttermilk biscuits, sugar, and vegetable oil. Hint: Use the cap from the vegetable oil to cut out the holes and then roll them up. When an ingredient doubles as a tool…it just doesn’t get any better – especially when you’re away from home!
Craving something extra? Want some variety? Beyond leaving them as is (plain) or coating them in sugar, here are 3 more options. Toss in a ½ teaspoon of cinnamon to the sugar bag for homemade cinnamon-sugar. Or – bring a few extra ingredients (below) to make a glaze (also quick ‘n easy!). Lastly, some powdered sugar never hurt anyone ☺. Wow – we just came up with 5 varieties. When you lay them out for everyone to enjoy they’ll swear you went and bought these in bulk at a warehouse club. Way to go!

If you have cast iron pans, this recipe can easily be made over the campfire on a grill grate. I wouldn’t recommend making it over a campfire without cast iron. And it also works well on a camp stove with a nonstick skillet.
- 1 can buttermilk biscuits, refrigerated
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- Plain Glaze (optional):
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar (optional, required for Plain Glaze)
- ¼ teaspoon salt (optional, required for Plain Glaze)
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional, required for Plain Glaze)
- ¼ cup milk (optional, required for Plain Glaze)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, required for Plain Glaze)
- Use the cap from the vegetable oil to cut out the holes and then roll them up. When an ingredient doubles as a tool…it just doesn’t get any better – especially when you’re away from home!
- Heat about 2 inches of oil in a pan and add 4-5 dough versions of the doughnut holes. Fry the donut holes in the oil, rolling them in the oil with tongs until they are golden-brown. Once the dougnut holes are done frying, put them on a paper towel or plate.
- Put the sugar or both sugar and optional cinnamon in a plastic or paper bag and add the doughnut holes. Shake well and enjoy!
- If you want to make the glaze, put the confectioners’ sugar and salt in a bowl. Add melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract and whisk until smooth. Then just dip each doughnut hole in the glaze and enjoy!
