While many of us already use our phones to shoot in-action selfies while out on the slopes, sometimes we want more… data. These 10 apps log runs, track elevation, predict conditions and map your location on the mountain all while you cut and shush. You won’t want to ski or ride without them!

The App: On The Snow 

Why It’s Great: Get weather and snow reports from more than 2000 ski and snowboard areas, along with access to web cams to see the conditions for yourself. Learn about the latest snowfall, the depth of the snow, and how many lifts are open. You can also read reports from others out on the mountain.

The App: Slopes

Why It’s Great: Slopes features easy tracking so you can log your runs and miles along with your performance stats. See your average speed along with your fastest from the day. 

You can also connect with friends and see where they are on the mountain via detailed interactive trail maps. No more waiting at the bottom of the lift while your friend is looking for you at the summit.

The App: OnX Backcountry

Why It’s Great: This relative newcomer is a little like AllTrails for snow sports. Head off-piste with detailed hiking and backcountry ski maps and GPS capabilities. Use 3D maps to gain a better understanding of your routes, and turn on snow mode to see angles of the slopes (something that can help you minimize avalanche danger). You can even access maps around the globe, no matter if you’re online or not.

Cost: Free; $29.99 annually for Premium feature

The App: Peakfinder

Why It’s Great: While not a typical ‘ski’ app, Peakfinder allows you to identify mountains you spot while skiing or snowboarding, and learn more about the world around you. If you’ve ever spotted a gorgeous peak off in the distance—this app can locate you via GPS and show you a 360-degree panoramic snapshot of your environs. Then it can label every peak, and provide details such as elevation.

Cost: $4.99 to download.

The App: Epic Mix

Why It’s Great: The Epic Mix app works for 37 North American Vail-owned resorts and can not only show you your stats and snow conditions, it can predict lift-line wait times, so you can best schedule your day. The app also offers GPS capabilities to show your location—and proximity to lodges and on-hill restaurants—making it easier to find your friends for lunch.

The App: Ikon Pass App

Why It’s Great: It’s downloadable for all North American resorts that participate in the Ikon Pass—yet works at partner mountains around the globe. View your stats (vertical and runs) along with your location, and earn motivational badges for your cumulative wins. You can also create friend ‘groups’ to share messages, and compete for a spot on the Ikon Pass leaderboard.

Cost: Free with the Ikon Pass. 

The App: CARV

Why It’s Great: This app is actually a system that doubles as your own, personal ski coach. The device fits into your ski boot and features sensors that track your movements. Blue-tooth technology allows for in-ear coaching, and the app relays your performance details such as edge control, balance and ski pressure. You can adjust your micro-movements to become a better skier with every run. 

Cost: $199 for the device; $99 for a six-day membership, with $19/day thereafter—billed annually, or $199/year for unlimited days.

The App: Mobile Avalanche Safety Tools

Why It’s Great: This one’s for the Android users and offers science-backed observations to help keep you safe in the backcountry. Learn about your routes snow angles along with the wind conditions and changing temperatures, to help ensure where you’re skiing or riding is as safe as possible.

The App: SkiLynx

Why It’s Great: SkiLynx helps you easily stay in contact with your friends and family while exploring the mountain. It shows you where everyone is on the mountain and allows for in-app chats so you can never lose touch. The app also features weather and runs skies, to help you track your day.

The App: Ski Tracks App

Why It’s Great: Perhaps the best part about Ski Tracks is that it’s super easy to use and offers GPS tracking along with smartwatch and social media capabilities, so you can share your runs and stats with the world. The app tracks your runs and elevation, along with the maximum speed you hit during the day—which is fun for bragging rights when you’re up for it.
