A Refreshing Mint Julep To Beat The Heat

Some cocktails are just made for hot weather, and the mint julep is near the top of that list. The mint has a cooling sensation both in scent and taste that can make even the hottest day a little more tolerable.

The drink is a truly American invention, popping up in the south during the eighteenth century. Legend has it that U.S. Senator Henry Clay introduced it to the famous Round Robin bar in Washington D.C. back in the day. There’s just something cool about sipping a cocktail that has soothed minds and bodies for hundreds of years, isn’t there?

Mint Julep

Recipe type: Cocktail
Serves: 1

Ingredients
  • 2-3 oz of bourbon
  • 1-2 teaspoons of simple syrup
  • fresh mint

Instructions
  1. They’re incredibly easy to make. Grab a highball and fill it with ice. Pour in 2-3 oz of bourbon and 1-2 teaspoons of simple syrup. Stir until its ice cold. Now take the freshest mint you can find and give it a good slap or two in between both hands. This will release the oils and really punch up the fragrance. Some prefer to muddle, but taste is all about smell anyway, so opening up the mint aroma does the same thing. Garnish with the mint on top and enjoy!
